Open Day for Schools – July 2024
High schools are invited to bring their Year 10 and 11 students along to an exclusive Open Day event. Previously known as UniX Senior, Open Day for Schools is tailored to help students with senior subject selection and post-school decision making through exploration of study and career opportunities.
Held on the days before the public Open Days in Cairns and Townsville, students will benefit from a quieter environment with more one-on-one time to discover their future opportunities.

Neuroscience & Stress STEM-Day
High schools in Townsville are invited to nominate Year 10 and 11 students to attend this exclusive full-day event, offering hands-on neuroscience workshops with a real-world focus at Ò»±¾µÀTownsville, Bebegu-Yumba campus. Students (and parents who are interested) will engage in a variety of practical STEM-based workshops exploring Neuroscience and Stress. Students will learn from JCU’s scientists with different backgrounds (e.g., anatomy, neuroimaging, medicine, engineering) and will have the opportunity to see a real brain in JCU’s world-class anatomy lab. By doing so, this event aims to build confidence in STEM and to open up the opportunity for related degrees and careers.
Limited student places are available per school – express your school’s interest below to be the first to know more information. Attendance is FREE but limited and includes free transportation and catering.

Science and Engineering Challenge
The Science and Engineering Challenge is a nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership with JCU. Through the Challenge, students experience aspects of science and engineering which they would not usually see in their school environment.
Year 10 students from across the region battled it out for a place at the State Super Challenge by building bridges, wiring cities, building a bionic hand, constructing earthquake proof towers and designing hovercrafts.
The challenge encourages students to think outside the box and come together as a team to achieve a mutual goal, check out some photos from the Science and Engineering Challenge 2023 on the Ò»±¾µÀ.

JCU’s Heroes programs are open to all year 11 and 12 students and give you behind the scenes access into what your dream career may look like. Titration Competition
Ò»±¾µÀis excited to host the Titration Competition for students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 located in Far North Queensland (Cairns and Townsville). The competition aims to encourage students who enjoy Chemistry - especially practical Chemistry - to recognise proficiency.

Young Language Ambassador Conference
The College of Arts, Society and Education is excited to bring back its annual Young Language Ambassador (YLA) program in Townsville, inviting language students and their teachers to participate in an inspirational and fun conference. To participate in the event, schools selected a maximum of 6 language ambassadors. Selected ambassadors can be in Year 5 to 12. Why AI and Social Sciences are Everywhere
Artificial Intelligence is everywhere – we talk about it in classrooms, on the news, on social media, and it’s fast becoming part of our everyday lives. But what does AI mean for people and for society? What are the ethical issues involved? Spend a day exploring these questions at JCU.
September 4 to 10 is Social Sciences Week in Australia. The theme for 2023 is Social Sciences are Everywhere. On Friday, 8 September, the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) group at JCU is inviting Year 9 students to come to campus for a day of discussion, activities, and scenario-based learning with social scientists and current social science students from a range of disciplines.
The day will include short ‘lightning talks’ from experts in a range of social science disciplines, interactive ‘beat the bot’ sessions to apply a critical lens to AI, and small group activities to facilitate inquiry skills, ethical thinking, and futures thinking about the impacts of AI on society and our environment.
UniX Year 8 - 2024
Schools are invited to bring their Year 8 students to Ò»±¾µÀTownsville or Ò»±¾µÀCairns for a day of excitement, fun and discovery. The Year 8 UniX experience provides students with an opportunity to sample what it’s like to study different subjects broadly covering science, engineering, medicine, nursing, education, social sciences, business and law. We aim to provide students with various career tasters to help identify and shape their future ambitions, assist with student subject choices in senior schooling years, and to promote positive post-school pathways to tertiary education.

A unique opportunity to up your STEM game
Engineering Futures is a live-in program giving students in Years 10, 11 and 12 the chance to sample university life and get more familiar with STEM subjects during the school holidays.
Fully funded by JCU, the program offers students a distinctive experience of tertiary education in science, engineering and technology-related fields, while still studying in high school. Over five days, students live on-campus and take part in academic, personal development and team-building activities, with opportunities to meet current Ò»±¾µÀstudents, university staff and other like-minded high school students.
